Hi there, I bought three Glasgow Silver Tablespoons today. I have dated them to 1837 but can't find the maker. The makers mark is "JMJ." with a superscript "R" above the dot. Is it likely this means JM Junior? Is the maker possibly provincial?

I believe it is the mark of John Muir, Junior. IP: Logged |

Thanks for that. I looked in my copy of Jacksons but could not find the mark, could you tell me where you found it? Was he indeed a Glasgow maker? IP: Logged |

JMJr is identified (tentatively) in the Jackson III Glasgow table for 1848 - 1903 only as "J. Muir, Jr." IP: Logged |

I have the 1964 Dover edition of Jacksons. I still can't locate Muir, only Muirhead. Is this not the best copy of Jackson's or am I just not looking hard enough? IP: Logged |

The third edition, revised, was issued in 1989. See the book thread in the Silver Ephemera and Documentation Forum for links to more information. The Scottish section has been extensively revised - with your interests, you should have it. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 03-23-2005).] IP: Logged |
