Attached are pictures of a dessert spoon, bearing full London hallmarks for 1832-33 and the maker's mark of William Chawner. The front of the handle bears a die-struck view of a Greek temple-like building. According to the dealer I purchased it from, the pattern was made for the Royal Exchange, the first official English stock exchange. I have no reason to doubt that this is true. However, he did say that I could find it in Pickford's book on English flatware patterns, and I have not been able to. Does anyone have any information about this pattern, or know what book it does appear in? I'm sure he found the information somewhere, if not in Pickford. Brent IP: Logged |

I too had a good look at Pickford, particularly in the "private die" section, but couldn't find it. However there seems to be no good reason to doubt this pattern as having been one of the Chawner private dies. I note that one of the English dealers is currently offering a set of tablespoons in this pattern, and have seen it offered at times previously. IP: Logged |
