My state library system has a 1921 copy of Jackson's and a 1935 copy of Wyler's "Old Silver" - not exactly a plethora of reference material. Photos 1 & 2 - "WM" Sheffield, 1877. A huge 53 grams, 5 1/2" Photos 3, 4 & 5 - "JC&S" London, 1905. 36 grams, 4 3/4" Any help is much appreciated. IP: Logged |

The "Sheffield Assay Office Register 1911" shows two "WM" marks of around the period of your tongs. "WM" with pellet between in a rectangular punch was entered by William Morton of 2 Court, Commercial Street, while "WM" in a rounded oblong punch belonged to William Mammatt of Albion Plate Works, Division Street. Both addresses were in Sheffield. The mark "J.C above & S" in a shield is very elusive, apparently not in Culme, nor a stray from B/ham or Sheffield, nor Jackson. Good luck on that one. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Adelapt. My photos weren't very good, but I'm learning. This mark is in a rounded oblong punch with no pellet, so perhaps I can ascribe the first piece to William Mammatt. I wonder if I'll be able to learn anything else about him. Does that reference include mark entry dates? IP: Logged |

The entry does have a date, which I will check up for you. I can think of no source of additional information on the maker, other than contacting the Sheffield Assay Office, & even then I doubt that there is much if anything on record other than the mark entry. IP: Logged |

The mark of William Mammatt was entered at Sheffield on 4 September 1876. IP: Logged |

Even just a name and date somehow provides great satisfaction when entered into my records, much more so with the place of employment! Much thanks. I can imagine that pride may have led him to leave his mark prominently on the outside of the piece, even though it is located right where one would hold the tongs in use. Update: (1/30/2006) I discovered 'William Mammat & Sons' had a mark listed as electroplaters 1886-1906. Just another tidbit for the record. I modified this post rather than adding a new post, so as not to bump it up to the top (I doubt there's much interest). [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 01-31-2006).] IP: Logged |
