I am ready to purchase my first reference book, but I was wondering whether there is any difference between the various printings of this book. Since the name was changed, I suppose it's incorrect to even call it the 3rd Edition. I ask because some sellers list the book as having 766 pages, others list 768 pages. Since I'm on the topic, does anyone know the issue price? Thanks all. [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 06-09-2005).] IP: Logged |

Although it is more costly, you would be well advised to get the latest edition. Jackson II reprints are still available from Dover, cheaper and easier to find than Jackson III, which is unfortunate, in that III is greatly revised and updated, and use of II only perpetuates what are now known to be errors. See the book thread (Books: questions, mentions and reviews) for links to discussions of this and other references. IP: Logged |

Yes, I intend to purchase the 3rd Edition, with the new title, edited by Ian Pickford. My question is only whether any errata corrections or additions were made in printings after 1989. For instance, is there anything to draw me to a 2000 printing over an earlier copy? IP: Logged |

I have seen only the original printing. If there have been any later changes, I have not heard of them Perhaps someone with a later printing (is there one?) could look at the jacket blurb and/or introductory pages - if there have been any revisions they would be mentioned. IP: Logged |

Hi Salmoned. I splashed out a few months ago and bought the "3rd ed" of Jackson's Silver & Gold Marks...of England, Scotland and Ireland", ed by Ian Pickford. It's described as "a third revised and enlarged edition", third edition (1989) and "reprinted" in 2005. It cost c 50.00 STERLING (c 75euro/ c 85USD). Living in Ireland, I bought from Amazxon.co.uk. It has been a great help in my quest. Best rgds, TBC [This message has been edited by TBC (edited 06-10-2005).] IP: Logged |

I was happy to find a copy for a bit less, including shipping to Hawaii. However, I was surprised to see that only makers up to 1850 were included (dropping later makers contained in the earlier edition to make room for a more complete list of earlier makers, I suppose). Wouldn't it be nice to have an encyclopedia of British makers, with quinquennial updates? IP: Logged |

The original Jackson didn't give details of the 'later' (post about 1850) makers as they were almost contemporary at the time and he seemed to consider it would have been advertising. The Pickford/Jackson didn't extend the makers later because they were covered comprehensively by Culme's 'Directory' which followed on from Grimwade, even if it only covered London registered marks. Note though that many makers from outside London chose also to register there, as well as at their local assay office. The specialised books on the marks of places like Chester, Birmingham, Newcastle and so on do provide good coverage but it does present problems of cost and availability to round those up. As someone else mentioned in one of the forums, one wonders sometimes whether one is a silver collector or a book collector! I might also add that having the old Jackson does have its advantages even if you have the new one. Other references mention marks by the page number in the old edition, and the old edition gives mostly the type of object marks were recorded from, and also the owner at the time, both useful things to know sometimes. Of course you have to be a bit obsessive to want all that (obsessive? us?). [This message has been edited by adelapt (edited 07-28-2005).] IP: Logged |
