The third marks (see other posts) that I had difficulty in identifying for my friend are on a set of six tea spoons. I've two pictures, the lion passant is not as clear as it could be:

These seem clearly London, but for what what year? On further study of my books, I think the mark is for 1 September 1815 to 28 May 1816. What threw me at first was the fact that the date letter is in a rounded shield (no point at the bottom) and the duty mark is also within a shield, this time rounded on top and straight at the bottom. Apparently, this coincided with an increase in the duty payable and also happened (inter alia, 1797 and 1804).

As to the maker, which is "IT", my guess here is that this is possibly John Tweedie (entered in 1783) although the latest record of this mark in Jacksons is for 1789-90.

Your views on the foregoing will be read with great interest.

Sincerely,

Tom

Your dating appears reasonable to me, but I wonder why you believe the maker mark is 'IT', as opposed to 'ID' or 'II'? Were you were able to rule out these possibilities by virtue of viewing the actual mark(s)?

Hi Salmoned,

Sorry for delay in responding, but I was away last week. I would not be so sure as to rule anything "out" and because they belong to a friend who lives quite a bit away from where I do, I cannot readily re-check. Point taken and I will re-check at the first opportunity.

Rgds,

Tom
