Ten or fifteen years ago, when I was seeing a lot of English silver, I developed what I thought was a recognition of good vs. bad Hester Bateman marks. It seemed, at least in the Virginia/Kentucky and Chicago areas, that there were perhaps more faked Hester Bateman pieces than legitimate.

The distinction I made was based on seeing different marks, some that matched published Bateman marks exactly and some that didn't, on pieces of radically different quality. Archaeological experience does wonders for honing one's abilities in pattern recognition....

Of course there are several other London HBs, too (Grimwade really is an essential reference), but most dealers call them all Hester's. Some of what I was seeing were of course the work of others; I remember at least one or two being clearly faked marks. Most were in the hands of dealers who didn't know any better.

My question, purely for the sake of curiosity (I don't really do a lot with English silver these days), is if others have noticed this and/or published on it. Any thoughts?

Several years ago, warnings went out to museums that a factory in Isreal was turning out made-to-order Bateman pieces (and others) of very high quality; several had passed through major auction houses without getting spotted.

That's pretty scary; I hadn't even considered the possiblity of large-scale commercial forgeries in silver. I guess that puts us in the same boat as collectors of high-end glass and ceramics.

And I suppose I can be thankful that on my budget it's not likely to become a major concern!

Samson was a French company that made excellent reproductions in the second half of the 19th century of earlier English ceramics and even marked many of their wares with the earlier trademark or manufacturers mark. They were made from hard paste porcelain so they can be distinguished from the earlier soft paste versions. Their wares are collectible in their own right however, as they were very faithful to the original design and are considerably less expensive.
I really do not know what the intent of the Samson Company was when they were selling these products with fake trademarks. I guess that could be determined by examining the method they used to place the items into commerce. If they sold the ceramics through normal retail outlets, perhaps no one was really deceived at the time and they just thought of the fake trademark as a “nice touch”.
