I am researching Samuel Cooke who was one of the leading silver bucklemakers and gold sword furniture makers in London in the late eighteenth century . Apprenticed to the silver bucklemaker Thomas Hatton in December 1762 (so probably born around 1750 ) he entered only two marks, both as a bucklemaker, in 1776 and 1789, at Crown and Sceptre Court, St James, where he paid rates from 1776 to 1830. The last marked item I have seen of his is 1813. He was almost certainly free of a different company than the Goldsmiths and his apprenticeship was presumably have been turned over to another master in 1764 when Hatton died. I assume he died between 1829 and 1837 but cannot trace the death. His father however is my main query. It may be the earlier Samuel Cooke who died 1763/64, who also made silver buckles, had at least one mark in the lost registers and left a widow, Elizabeth who entered marks in 1764. ( Grimwades supposition that she was the widow of Thomas Cooke is erroneous). Any other information on this guy very welcome. IP: Logged |

I can now add a few more details on the Samuel Cooke of Crown and Sceptre Court. His will, dated April 1816 was proved in November 1817, so he must have died in between those dates. One of his sons, John and his sister Susannah appear to inherited the business and ran it jointly , John Cooke registering a mark as goldworker in November 1816. John's will dated December 1827 was proved in January 1829, after some apparent legal problem. It is likely that Samuel's will was delayed in probate also - I think he died in late 1816, just before John entered his mark. Susannah vacated the premises at Crown and Sceptre Court in late 1829, and it appears that this was by then only a business premises, the family living in a very posh house at 21 Sloan Square since at least 1812. Any further details on the Cooke family still greatly appreciated IP: Logged |
