Hello all, This nice early 19th C salt caster belongs to an acquaintance of mine. The form is fairly standard; G. Barnard Hughes' classic book "Small Antique Silverware" illustrates a virtually identical caster made by T & J.C. Creswick of Sheffield and hallmarked for 1812. I am certain of the authenticity of this piece. The mark, though, is a bit of a puzzler. In the picture are three views of the same mark, which is located on the interior of the foot rim. It appears to be a cross or bird-like device, with an initial mark of what appears to be two "R"'s with one R reversed and inverted. I can't recall seeing a mark like this before. The closest match I can make is one used by a Chester silversmith, but the R is not reversed. We have kicked around the idea of it being old Sheffield plate, but there is no wear through and the piece is a bit thicker than most OSP. I don't think it is American, but it might well be English provincial or even colonial. Any ideas? Brent IP: Logged |

Haven't got the books with me, but I'd be checking for either an Anglo-Indian or Cape origin. IP: Logged |

Wynyard Wilkinson in "Indian Colonial Silver" illustrates similar casters. A16 by F. Dormieux (1816-1824), A96 by J. Hunt (1788-1816), A149 by J. Rondo (1788-1846)and A193 by Twentyman & Co. One appears to be a 'tally mark'. ozfred IP: Logged |

Hello, Thank you both for your suggestions. I will pass the info on to the owner, and we will pursue the Indian angle further. Thanks again! Brent IP: Logged |
