[26-0528] Hi, I have just purchased a silver topped walking cane and I am wondering whether anybody could help? The marks show as a lion, a leopards head and the letter e. The seller has researched it to be London made in around 1860. There is also the makers mark L & Co described as being probably Liberty & Co. Although I still love the piece even though it is very battered, by my reckoning if the hallmark is correct it would make the cane to early to be Liberty & Co as I don't think they opened until around 1865. The only other L & Co that I can find is Larsen & Co of Copenhagen and I can find very little about them. Does anybody think that I am right or do you think it could still be Liberty (my favorite option) and the hallmarks have been mis-dated. Thank you very much in anticipation. I hope this makes sense!

There is John Lawrence & Co of Birmingham using a J L & Co mark and working at the appropriate time, though I don't know why it would be assayed in London. IP: Logged |

Thanks WEV for such a prompt response, i have not really got much experience in the silver arena, i tend to just pick the odd thing up that catches my eye purely just for the pleasure of owning them. I am just trying to explain what is now going to come across as sheer ignorance, it makes sense to me that it has London marks because of the sequence of lions head etc. I have however also seen the same style e under the Birmingham heading on the website that i use to look at Hallmarks. Does this mean that it could be made in Birmingham which would lend weight to this being J L & Co or do you think it was made in London!!!Thanks again IP: Logged |

I believe these marks are London marks dating from 1920. The date letter is the same form as that used in 1860, but the shield shape is different, and a duty mark would have been used in 1860, but not in 1920. There are at least four London firms using the letters L&Co. in their marks during the period shortly following 1900, so a picture of the maker's mark would be helpful. IP: Logged |

I agree, it is definitely 1920 because of the shape of the cartouche with the squiggle shape along the bottom. The cartouche around the 1860 "e" comes to a single point on the bottom. When buying silver I have found that the best approach is that unless I am 100% confident in my own knowledge I never completely trust the seller's identification or the story they provide - I always double check with a quality reference book.
