I am trying to identify the marks on a silver tea service (family heirloom). City mark is Birmingham. Date letters are from 1855 to 1858.

The maker's mark consists of the letter "S LD", with the D in superscript above the L. The letters are within two overlapping circles (somewhat reminiscent of the MasterCard symbol).

I do not have access to a third party server (that I know of) through which to post an image.

Thank you for any assistance.

Sadly, you don't get silver manufacturing companies in Britain using the protection of being 'Companies of limited liability' until toward the end of the c.19th. (What the L and D stand for in the maker's mark)

I would suggest that your teaset is more likely to be 1931-1933 and made by Suckling Limited (SLD as you describe).

To be sure, check where the marks are placed on your pieces (I bet they are on the sides) and also look to see that there is NO QUEEN's HEAD - pieces made in the 1850's had to have the Queen's Head to show that the appropriate tax (duty) had been paid.

Hope this helps! smile
