I think this is definitely English. It is a crystal perfume bottle with a silver neck marked with the Lion Passant, a shield with what looks like two mushrooms on top of another one and a very elaborate looking L sideways. Literally there is a curl at every part of the L but it is sideways. The intitials J & R G precede the three hallmarks. Who is the maker please, if anyone knows? IP: Logged |

In the absence of a picture, and assuming that it really is an English mark, your description sounds like Chester, 1911. J & R G is J & R Griffin. The Chester shield is actually 3 wheatsheaves with a sword between the top 2. If you post a picture my guess can quickly be confirmed or disproved. Phil IP: Logged |

Thank you for replying. I think you are absolutely right. I thought they were 3 mushrooms but on reflection they are more like sheaves of wheat with a sword going through them. There is definitely a Lion Passant, the v-shaped shield with the wheat, and a very elaborately looped "L" shape, but sideways instead of upright. I wish I could send photos but I have AOL and I don't think they are condusive to hosting my piccies. Any suggestions. I do have a digital camera? IP: Logged |
