[26-0201] I have purchased my second marrow scoop (marks for the first to be found in the British/Irish Silver forum). I wonder if anyone is in a position to pinpoint the date?
Many thanks, T. IP: Logged |

I believe the marks are for the London assay office (leopard's head), the lion passant for Sterling silver. Unfortunately, I cannot decipher the date letter nor the maker's mark. Any change of a close up ? Thank you, IP: Logged |

Looking closer - I think it is Moses Brent, late 18th century. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

I'm afraid this is the only photo I have at the moment. I have not yet taken delivery of the scoop. When I do, I can try to find someone with a decent digital camera and try again. T. IP: Logged |

Do you think it is 1772? I had thought it was a bit older, and guessed 1714. 1656 and 1654 are two other possibilities. Do you think those dates are too early for this sort of scoop? T. IP: Logged |

Forgot to add this: do you think the MB is a maker's mark? It looks like engraving to me. T. IP: Logged |

I cannot read the date letter very well, it seems to be the letter "a" in lower case - and this would date the item to 1776. I also seem to think the maker's mark MB stands for Moses Brent. Maybe someone else could confirm these points as I myself am a fairly newcomer to silver. Good luck! IP: Logged |

The date letter looks to be for London 1771 (the letter Q). Maker's mark to the left hand side undecipherable. Engraved initials to the right (MB) are those of an owner. IP: Logged |

Adalapt is of course correct in the matters of the date and owner's initials. Various monitors display images differently, and I can read the maker's mark as GS. There are several similar marks, but based on the date, I believe that this one is most likely that of George Smith II (Grimwade 898), entered in 1771, the same year in which the scoop was marked. Thanks to all. I should receive the scoop this week. If the mystery seems not to have been solved by the experts here, I will re-post additional photographs. Cheers, T. IP: Logged |

I received the scoop today: swarter is undoubtedly correct -- hallmark is a Q and maker's mark is GS. Many thanks for your help. Cheers, T. IP: Logged |
