Hi, I would appreciate any help in identifying who this maker was. I am new to silver collecting and have made an attempt at hallmark identification but don't know if I am right. The spoon in question is a larger table spoon, initials engraved at the top and the following I think.. Lion Passant Are the last the makers mark and how do I find out who they were please? This silver was an heirloom from a Yorkshire family if that helps. Many thanks, IP: Logged |

The date letter could also be 1856. Is the duty mark the head of a women or a man? If a man, the monarch would be George III, and 1816 is correct. If it is a woman, that would be queen Victoria and 1856 is the date. Yes, the WB is a maker's mark, but I don't know who the maker was. Good luck, [This message has been edited by tmockait (edited 04-13-2005).] IP: Logged |

In order to properly identify hallmarks, a photograph is necessary. IP: Logged |

Thank you both for such swift replies. I have a book of hallmarks here and the shape of the head is definitely different to the 1856 one and whilst balnk it is very like the 1816 one. Looking into my family history file I think the initials at the top may be of my ancestor Joseph Jowett although he was born 1811, could this have been given as a present to a young family member do you think? I will try to place a photo but my camera batteries are running low. Thanks again. IP: Logged |

I know that giving Apostle spoons as birthday gifts has been a long-standing custom in the Nethelands, but I am not sure about England. Swarter is right, we really need that photo, not just to help with the id, but because we enjoy seeing the objects! Tom IP: Logged |
