Its about 5 inches high and 2 inches across.

I have tried to find it but no luck the mark is to small for me to get a good photo but it does say made in England and what looks like an cursive e flowing into a cursive l? with a crown over it.

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

ps its a mesh design looks like a glass bottle would fit into it as a liner?

Hi! A fat toothpick? How about drawing a picture of it. Where did you get it, why did you get it? It could be anything. Help us out here and we will respond in kind. Jersey

Hi again Arthur! Thanks for the photo, it apparently wasn't showing when I looked before. Obviously NOT a toothpick. Will try & figure it out.
Try a magnifying glass on the mark & take the picture. Happy Holiday. Jersey

Me again Arthur! It seems to me that I can recall perfume bottles being made with that type of holder.

From my experience, I believe that the item in question is possibly a condiment holder. I have run across similar ones that were used to hold tobasco sauce, worcheshire sauce, and even ketchup. I even recall an advertisement of a ketchup holder in an old Towle catalog. I will try my best to find the advertisement.

They used these silver holders to hold the bottles of condiments so that another container was not necessary. The bottle would slide right in and cover up the lable, just showing the top.

Holders like this were made for a vast array of commercial items. Perfume, cologne, ketchup, steak sauce. Sometimes they are a premium for a specific product. From your description it sounds like tabasco sauce might work in this one. The company would offer the holder to their customers, frequently in return for labels and other proofs of purchase. The makers remain elusive and unknown. (But they usually end up at the Oneida Company door.)

Sometimes the maker was a firm that really did not make silver. Instead they made perfume bottles and holders. Or commercial table ware. Or lamps and picture frames. Which were then silver plated. By who knows who.

My guess would be to keep trying various commercial bottles until you find one that fits. Then start working back until you find an offering of the holder from that firm. This is far from silver research, but lets us work out how silver appeared in people's lives.

The idea behind the holder, and the reason for offering it, was that this way the bottle did not leave rings on the table.

There are a great amount of this type of "holder" here in England, and the glass liner is usually blue. If the liner is missing, there are a couple of companies that will supply a replacement for the said items.

I can't read the mark, but given the size, I might suggest that it is a LISTERINE holder. I know that there were manufacturers who made reticulated silver holders to "class up" such things as cheese spread jars, Tabasco sauce, Worcestershire and Listerine bottles, even to showing them in their trade catalogues with the commercial bottles in place. So, I can't be sure if it's a dressing table or dining table, but something of that sort.
