I have a owned a lovely enamel cigarette case hallmarked Birmingham c1929 for a few years. The makers marks are J.H.W. I would love to know who could have made it.

This looks to be the mark of John Harrison Wilkinson (Culme No. 9300). He recorded this mark in London in 1890, which would seem to be too early, but he was still listed in 1922 -- at two Bermondsey addresses (one a residence) -- so it would appear that he had a long career. If this is the correct identification, it would seem that either he had some of his work sent for assay to Birmingham, or he obtained this piece "umsigned" from a Birmingham maker and added his own mark (or overstamped another).
