[26-0398] Hello everyone, I'm glad to have found this wonderful forum, hope to learn and help when I can. Can anyone identify these markings and tell me some data about it? IP: Logged |

Date letter is the Gothic "B" for 1737- 1738 London, but according to Jackson the William Head duty mark was only used from 29th May to 21st June 1837, thus placing assay date to within a 23 day period. Great accuracy for a change! The uncrowned Leopard also confirms a post 1822 date. C+B is probably one of Charles Boyton's 1830-34 marks as a spoonmaker. I am not very familiar with spoons but it seems possible to me that the spoon may have been updated in mid Victorian times. Other members more knowledgeable than me will know however. IP: Logged |

The spoon looks to have been "prettified" some time after its manufacture as a plain fiddle pattern - rather as such things were turned into "berry" spoons later in the 19th century (and in the 20th) to enhance saleability. The actual span of use of that combination duty mark/date letter may well have been somewhat longer than the short period Clive mentions, as the assay office didn't necessarily respond immediately to the change of reign.
