[26-0623] I was given an old Silver/Crystal inkwell by my grandmother a while ago. Looking at the marks, I figure that it's from Birmingham, year 1778. I can't figure out who the maker "A. & Co LTD" was nor can I find any info on what the letter "4" at the end of the markings means. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I do not know exactly when the term "Limited" (=Ltd.) came into use, but I am sure it was after the 18th Century. This alone should tell you that your marks are later. I am sorry to disappoint you, but your piece was marked in 1926 (if it were anywhere in between (i.e. 1856) there would be a sovereign's head duty mark). Perhaps one of our contributors with a reference for later Birminghan marks will be able to identify the maker for you. IP: Logged |

Ah yes...that does make MUCH more sense! Thank you. After looking up Birmingham Date Letters again, I think you may have meant 1929, unless I'm mistaken. (http://domain751573.sites.fasthosts.com/assayoffice/index.html) IP: Logged |

The maker is Asprey & Co Ltd. and, yes, it is 1929. The "4" does not mean anything in terms of the official hallmarking; it is a workshop mark which may be related to either the piece itself or to the silversmith. Phil IP: Logged |

Hey so, total newbie question here: Is there a convenient internet resource where one can look up company names and hallmarks? It's easy enough to find dates etc., but I haven't found an online catalog of company markings... IP: Logged |
