[26-0754] This fork is about 6 7/8 inches long. There are two marks on it, one looks like the British lion hallmark, the other is only a partial mark. I didn't see any other marks. The handle is well used and has lots of small dents in it. I am curious as to whether or not this is a sterling handle, what the tines are made of, and how old it might be. I have no plans to sell this piece. Thanks for your help, sorry there isn't more to work with. IP: Logged |

This looks to be an English 18th century pistol-handled fork. The tines would be steel, and may have originally been silver plated. The reason the handle has many small dents is that it is a hollow shell, originally made in two halves. The inside would be filled with pitch or resin or similar substance. The marks don't allow exact identification, and are what one would expect for a fork of that age, but most likely are for London assay. IP: Logged |

Thank you so much for your response and the great information. I was hopeful that it was an older fork but without all the hallmarks I just didn't know as I am a beginner. This was a garage sale goodie Thanks again, I really appreciate your help. IP: Logged |

This looks to be a place or individual carving fork, used for cutting up small birds. Nice item, and they frequently have become separated from their knives. IP: Logged |

All I have to say is, Neat fork!! I need to keep my eyes open for finds like that at a garage sale. It's fun to imagine someone over 200 years ago using it. IP: Logged |
