Hi and welcome to the forum. It is very difficult to say much of anything without some good clear photos - including closeups of the markings and overall photos of your bowl. It would also be helpful to getting a good response if you could share a bit of information as to your interest in silver in general and this bowl in particular. IP: Logged |

Welcome to the forum. We really need a photo to help id your piece. If it is from England, it could be the stamp for Brimingham with a date letter, but I would need to see a picture to be sure. The shape of the punch is important. Tom IP: Logged |

In the absence of a picture I can say that your bowl was probably made by James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Sheffield. JD & WD are John Deakin and William Deakin, the partners in the company. However the period during which this mark was used does not include a cursive i. A picture will allow positive identification. IP: Logged |

Welcome! I'd agree with PhilO's identification of both the marks and the problem. Conceivably it's a gothic 'i' instead of cursive? That would match for Sheffield 1901. The scratched-in letter/numbers are not part of a hallmarking system, but rather codes used typically for inventory control by makers and/or retailers. Some large estates might also have used such a system; I've occasionally seen pieces with as many as 3 or 4 different sets of them. (I say scratched-in rather than engraved just because they're generally only very lightly engraved, but of course the process technically is engraving) IP: Logged |
