Hello! I am interested in understanding marks on silver, especially Colonial period, Coin Silver and British. This is a little teaspoon which looks Colonial American c.1790 but has funny lion and letter. Can anybody help, please?

I think we'll need to see that lion and letter to make any worthy comments. Can you post a clear picture of them? IP: Logged |

The funny lion is a the typical British mark to indicate it is sterling silver. I don't see a city assay office mark but sometimes small items didn't get the full set of marks. The letter "f" mark, the shape of the "f" and the shape of the cartouche around it suggest to me that it could be the mark for Exeter, circa 1822, but I would defer to others for a positive ID. Nice spoon. Looks more likely London 1781 to me. IP: Logged |

Yes. I would expect to see the duty mark for 1821/2. So, I would guess London, 1781/2, by Charles Hougham (mark entered 1769) per Jackson's (3rd Ed). I'm no expert, however, so this is only speculation. [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 07-20-2005).] IP: Logged |

See posting under British - I will try and make it clear why your spoon is London 1781. [This message has been edited by Silver Lyon (edited 07-22-2005).] IP: Logged |
