Hello all, Here is a little gilt silver ladle, marks for London 1851-52, by prolific flatware maker George Adams. The length is about right for a mustard, but the bowl is about half the size of the mustard ladles I know. I was wondering if any of the English silver enthusiasts knew for certain what it is. Could it be a pepper server, for powdered cayenne? Or perhaps just a snuff spoon? I believe it to be authentic, rather than an alteration from some other form, but what it is I just don't know. How about an apothecary spoon, for dispensing/preparing small quantities of medicines/drugs? IP: Logged |

Maybe horseradish? That's often used in smaller doses than mustard. With what appears to be a family crest I'm inclined not to think apothecary use, but it's certainly possible.... IP: Logged |

Hello Brent! Perhaps a "tasting spoon"?! There are similar spoons I've seen, however a large bowl is on one end & a small bowl on the other for Mothers to taste the food before giving it to their children. Why not! Jersey IP: Logged |

This is a typical cayenne pepper spoon, sometimes they come with integral stoppers for fitting them in the condiment bottles, see some of those illustrated in Fig.344, page 195 Ian Pickford: Silver Flatware, Antique Collector's club, Suffoilk 1983. Nice silver-gilt example, wonderful condition, congratulations on your purchase. ------------------ IP: Logged |
