I post the pictures of the Limerick ladle, made by George Moore(1765-1785)here, as it is the more appropriate forum. The ladle is 14.5" and has the typical hooked handle of Irish ladles. It is in fine condition with crisp engraving. ------------------ Dorothea Burstyn IP: Logged |

The ladle certainly does have a spectacular bowl design. I can see why you like this ladle. Good luck in your search. IP: Logged |

I am absolutely green with envy over this ladle. It is truly a museum piece and a prime example of why I love Irish silver. Have you had it a long time or is it a recent find? IP: Logged |

Thanks, whenever I look at this ladle I get the "warm and fuzzy" feeling, I have it for a long time, it came out of the Alice Bishop estate, also Kingston,Ontario - there were so many wonderful Irish things in the sale. But also a very important piece - a mazer bowl dating to the 16th century, which is now in the ROM - but was bought at that sale for ca. xxx. Needless to say that I was not the lucky buyer, must admit that I never even looked at this piece. I remember all these things were piled onto tables in the garden....." the good old days". ------------------ IP: Logged |

A curiostiy question: why was the Limerick mark totally different from that for the rest of Ireland (no Hibernia or harp)? Tom IP: Logged |

The Royal Charter of Charles I(1637) required all Limerick silver to be sent to Dublin for assaying, and there are entries for Limerick silver in Dublin's assay office from ca. 1711 on. But most of the silversmiths did not send their articles to Dublin; distance, travelling difficulties and the likelihood of theft by highwaymen were the main reasons. Then the duty of 6d per ounce, introduced in 1730, made the silversmiths even more hesitant to send their silver for assaying. Their market was in their cities anyway and the customer knew and trusted them. Most of Limerick silver in the 18th and 19th century is marked with Sterling (in George Moore's case Starling) and the master mark, often struck twice. The word Sterling was introduced 1710. Since no date letter appears on Limerick plate, the time when the silversmith was active is used as date indicator. There is of course much more to be said about this - and for a more complete picture of laws, etc. please see Douglas Bennett: Collecting Irish silver, Souvenir Press, 1984. ------------------ IP: Logged |

What a great piece! Like feniangirl, I am an Irish shade of green with envy! Limerick silversmiths were not alone in their failure to send pieces to Dublin for assay marks. The use of the maker's mark and the use of the "sterling" or "starling" mark is also found on pieces from Cork in the same time frame. Much rarer are provincially marked pieces from Youghal, Galway, Belfast and Kinsale. [This message has been edited by doc (edited 09-06-2006).] IP: Logged |
