[21-0430] I recently saw a pair of three branch candelabra with the Matthew Boulton's starbursts on the bases. One candelabrum also has a T pellet M mark inside the center candle holder. This mark is inside a saw tooth rectangle and looks like a makers mark. Could this mark be from the individual silversmith who made the piece at the Boulton factory? This mark was only on one of the candelabrum, the second one having an impressed circle instead. IP: Logged |

These are probably workmen's marks which are sometimes found on English plated wares. The marks were used in larger companies to keep track of the output of each worker (for pay purposes) and also to determine who was responsible for any poor quality work. Each workman had his own punch, sometimes initials, more often a small symbol such as a star or leaf. The marks were stamped on inconspicuous places of each item such as, as you've noticed, inside a candle holder. [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 03-31-2003).] IP: Logged |

... and here's a Boulton mark with the workman's mark (a leaf?) stamped right in the middle of the Boulton mark.

Thank you for the great information. I looked at the other one and it has what looks like a leaf at the bottom of the candle holders on the two outer branches. The candelabrum look identical, but may have been made by different workmen. Thanks again for your very interesting and informative forum. IP: Logged |
