I recently acquired a buckle which I think may have the marks of Trevillion Taylor prior to his one recorded by Grimwade as registered in 1760. According to Grimwade Taylor went to the West Indies (Jamaica ?) around 1742 after being turned over as an apprentice to John Wilbert and worked as a journeyman there until his return to England in 1746. This buckle has no assay marks, only two makers marks very much like Grimwade no 2948. Although given as a journeyman only in the West Indies I suspect he may have marked a few for himself in the West Indies, or maybe a 1746 - 1758 mark in the lost London registers. Buckle is somewhat crude, being an unchased casting, and by London style is around 1740 to 1750. Any clues very welcome. Clive IP: Logged |
