I think that this is called a 5 o'clock spoon. I have several matching spoons and a tong. I don't think that this is sterling but I wanted to see if anyone was familiar with the hallmark. The mark reads A&DS. IP: Logged |

I believe the A&D stands for Allen & Darwin, Sheffield, England. Pat. IP: Logged |

I apologize for my ignorance but I have never heard of a 5 o'clock spoon except on that west coast auction site. Please enlighten me and tell me what is a 5'oclock spoon. Thank you. IP: Logged |

A 5 o'clock spoon is the small teaspoon available in older silver patterns. They are usually lightweight, and are larger than the demitasse spoon. Looking at old price lists, I find that this is a standard industry term. They are very practical pieces to own if you have people over for afternoon tea. I'm very clumsy, and am always losing my teaspoon off of my saucer if I use the standard size one. The smaller, lighter 5 o'clock stays in place better when the cup and saucer are being held in the hand, rather than sitting on a flat surface.
