Is this indeed a Jonathan Hayne mark (it appears the closest match in Jackson's)? I wonder about the odd filing it seems to have suffered. Also, the latter inscription leaves me puzzled - perhaps a souvenir? [Stratford on Avon 1901] IP: Logged |

The mark certainly looks like Jonathan Hayne's 1808 largeworkers mark as recorded in Grimwade (Nr 1408 ). By the side of this mark Grimwade states, rather despairingly, "and one larger and two smaller marks same date. Twelve others similar 1821 -1834" As this pair of very interesting tongs is datelettered 1831/32 it seems very likely to be Haynes, as there are no other candidates for JH that I can find in the time frame. But I have been fooled by Georgian I's, J's, and T,s before ! The partial filling in of the mark may be an attempt by a retailer to erase his supplier's mark - a not unuusual practise . IP: Logged |

Stratford-upon-Avon was the birthplace of Shakespeare. So I strongly suspect somebody purchased these tongs on a visit there, or already owned them, and had them inscribed as a souvenir of the visit. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Grimwade's is high on my 'want it' list. This object has a small (1/8") crack appearing only on the outside of the bow about 3/16" from the edge. As this was unmentioned damage I was tempted to return it, but my wife wouldn't let me - thanks for her good sense (of course, she didn't even notice the damage until I pointed it out). IP: Logged |
