I recently bought a buckle from a Jersey source with AL as the only mark , although there may have been another, single, mark obliterated . I have a record of an identical buckle which was noted as having a makers mark of TM with a Lion Passant , Birmingham Anchor , George Head and date of 1819. The date letter may well have been the 1793 "V " as the buckle style is more likely for that date, and the two "V" s are often confused.

My mind, ever hopeful, suggests that this may be a Birmingham made buckle, sent out with a makers mark only, un-assayed (as an export this may well have been legal) to the Channel Islands. The C.I. retailer removed the original mark, then added his own mark.

This has happened before with buckles, I have a pair with George Mauger's mark on them which are a typical Birmingham design and Mauger is known to have imported goods from England.

Can anyone tell me if this looks like a recorded C.I. makers mark please?

The only book I have is Richard Mayne's Channel Islands Silver. He shows IL marks for "possible" Jacques Limbour, but the two marks shown have clear differences to your mark. One has a crown above the IL and the other shows the base of the L with very sharp extensions on both ends.

Many thanks AHWT. I do not have Maynes book so could not check Jacques Limbour's recorded marks.

Above is one mark shown by Mayne for Jacques Limbour. It looks different to me, but I will let you be the judge as I am not a good mark reader.

I do not have any silver from the Channel Islands, but have occasionally seen it. It seems fairly rare.

Thanks again. I do not think if I was on a jury I would convict - similar but not identical !
