Hello all, Here is an interesting large all-silver buckle, simply marked OVD in a rectangle. I suspect it is not English, but I place it here to be sure Clive finds it. Anyway, are there any stylistic giveaways as to origin and date? I am pretty much a novice when it comes to buckles. Brent IP: Logged |

This is indeed a mighty buckle. My first impresssion was that this is an English stock buckle from around 1780 converted to a knee buckle - until I noticed the ruler so thoughtfully provided . It is literally double the size I first thought ! Although the decoration style is quite English late eighteenth century, the frame construction and prongs look more Dutch and nineteenth century. . The huge anchor chape also has me baffled. The "buttonhole" into which that would be inserted would be big indeed. Purpose - unknown. Maker - unknown but I think maybe the V stands for Van or Von - my GUESS is Western European -first half of nineteenth century. Thanks for showing it - As they say on the TV quiz show - I am going to Email a friend ! IP: Logged |

This looks Dutch or German to me. IP: Logged |
