I am trying to look up an old post about a popular English pattern circa 1850, which i thought was called vine. It basically has vines all over it. I am quite sure I have seen it here before but can't remember? Any help? A search for vine yielded no results. If there is no post, anyone know what I am talking about? IP: Logged |

Look in Ian Pickford: Silver Flatware, English, Irish and Scottish 1660-1980-, Antique Collector's Club, Suffolk 1983, page 132 ff. there are many variations of the Vine pattern, such as Bright Vine, Trailing Vine, Chased Vine (that's probably the one you look for - it comes in single and double struck) and Pierced Vine (chased and pierced). The later two beautiful patterns, mostly used for dessert services. IP: Logged |

See also an article in Silver Magazine, March-April 2004, by William P. Hood, Jr. and others entitled "Exceptional nineteenth century British flatware." Scott Martin might be able to arrange reproduction of that article here if you're interested. IP: Logged |

I believe that Francis Higgins' Chased and Pierced Vine pattern is still produced by C.J. Vander/Wallace English Sterling. Online sources indicate that Higgins displayed this pattern at the Great Exhibition of 1851 (Crystal Palace Exhibition, Hyde Park, London). Try entering "chased & pierced vine" in a google search, and you are sure to see many examples. IP: Logged |

It is interesting to compare F. Higgins pieces with the new Vander pieces (Vander got sold a couple of years ago and is not an English firm anymore) - they appear flat and lifeless. IP: Logged |
