Does anyone have any experience with the UK assay offices and their use of lasers instead of dies to apply their hallmarks? Can you tell the difference? See: Laser Marking IP: Logged |

Scott, Here is a link to London Assay Office web page, which explains their various marking processes, including laser marking. Hope this helps. Tom IP: Logged |

Thanks Tom. I am interested in member's first hand experience with the UK assay offices and/or marks made with lasers instead of dies? Can one tell the difference between struck and lasered marks? IP: Logged |

I emailed the assay office yesterday and this morning received a reply. Lyn Mills Secretary to Deputy Warden replies with the following. We do three levels of laser marking, 2D, 3D with light and 3D this is the shallowest to the heaviest. Lyn states that there is no way laser marking could be mistaken for hand hallmarking. Although I haven't seen laser hallmarking things that I have seen 'engraved' or executed with laser have been so sharp and precise in appearance as to never be mistaken for hand stamping. It is also far less attractive, even in something like a hallmark. Salvers could also be perfectly engraved with crests, scenes, etc but it will look wrong. IP: Logged |

quote:Stamping compresses the metal under the stamp, while (I assume) lasering renmoves metal as does engraving (but not the same way). On thin metal, the punches telegraph their impressions to the other side of the metal and can be seen and felt as raised areas. On thick silver, metal can be raised around the edges of the punch as metal is pushed aside, and if not burnished level can also be felt. I would not expect lasering to show either of these effects.
