I have a silver bowl that has the English Hallmarks and is also marked Birks, Sterling on the bottom. Isn't Birks a Canadian company? Why would it have both marks? Also, would anyone know what the English hallmark stands for?

John Turton & Co, Sheffield 1924. I have seen several items with both English hallmarks and Birks' mark. It seems that Birks imported English silver for resale. I seem to recall seeing one piece marked "Made in England for Birks", but I can't remember any details. Phil IP: Logged |

A search of the Forums will yield information about the Canadian company Birks. You could also check their website for a history of the firm and its long connection with England. IP: Logged |
