I purchased these at an estate sale this week. They are totally outside my field of knowledge and my usual taste, but they did bring to mind the recent thread in the American silver before sterling forum that discussed and linked to a great cast sugar tongs site. These are about 5 1/4 inches long, and the only marks are what I assume to be the lion passant and a WC. IP: Logged |

Date around 1760 -1770. Maker unlikely to be William Cripps (sorry Agphile !) as all his punches had, according to Grimwade , a pellet. More likely to be William Chatterton's 1766 mark. According to Grimwade he is probably the William Chatterton who was prosecuted in 1767 for" soldering bits of standard silver to Tea tongs and buckles and sending the same to the Company's Assay office in order to obtain their marks to the same". One guesses that Mr Chatterton knew which part of the workpiece was likely to be scraped for assay sample. The mark is familiar to both tong and buckle collectors IP: Logged |

Cast sugar tongs are shown on this site and tentatively are attributed to William Chatterton (or perhaps others). There are several web sites showing tea tongs of this type. Since tongs of this style were cast, it would seem that the silversmith would have made multiple copies of the same style. This style had a tendency to crack and may have gone out of fashion for that reason. IP: Logged |

Thank you Clive, ahwt, and agphile for your replies and your expertise. When I get time I will try to post a better picture of the WC. The C is noticeably lower than the W, and the lower end of it comes up high enough to be a G but with no crosspiece. I'm thrilled to find I have something that old. My only other pieces that may be of that vintage are a beat-up soup spoon and what appears to be the bottom of a caster that someone started to cut in two. IP: Logged |
