Just a candle snuffer that is worth a look maybe. The maker is unknown to me, and the dating should be fairly obvious but have a go anyway. Any other information on a piece like this would be welcome too.

As a buckle specialist I would expect this mark to be London 1808/09 and the maker William Ballantine. However Ballantine, who I know exported to the United States, was bankrupt in 1800 and I have never seen buckles of his later than this. He may perhaps have recovered from bankruptcy - many did - and decide to silversmith other items rather than buckles. However, and I hope I am wrong, these snuffers make me very uneasy. They seem wrong for period. But I know nothing of snuffer styles ! IP: Logged |
