Hi there, I was looking through a pile of scrap at a local pawn shop, helping my friend determine what was silver and what was plated, when I found these cute sugar tongs. As I thought about it, I realized that auction buyers, even at the national level, would not appreciate these tongs (cheap buyers that they are), and that they (the tongs not the buyers) deserved better treatment. So it is that these tongs will be shown about as the special item they are and retired to my collection . There are 4 sets of marks on the inside of the arms, and they are shown in the photos below. One set is date and location, a second set is makers mark, a third set is a patent date (never seen that on Brit silver before), and the fourth is an unknown. I will admit that is is well marked. Thanks in advance for your help. Marc

Culme's Directory of Gold & Silversmiths 1838-1914 gives the mark as that of Walter Villa Gilbert, managing director of the Vilcar (Parent) Co. Ltd. Although the mark wasn't registered until 1908, apparently the mechanism of these tongs was patented in 1907 (as evidenced by the suffix -07), and probably late in the year, as it was the 28,097th of 28,769 patents issued that year. Hope this helps! (My 400th post and it's in the British forum?) [This message has been edited by blakstone (edited 08-12-2008).] IP: Logged |

These tongs, with a very clever mechanism indeed, are a well recorded rarity. I have seen a boxed set of four different sized ones - again Edwatdian period, English hallmarks. What the purpose of some of the four sizes was is unknown - they ranged from too small for sugar to vast ! IP: Logged |
