can anyone solve the conundrum i'm having concerning the scottish silversmith P.A who made a "pair of sterling silver queen's pattern stuffing spoons with raised applied decoration to handle, glasgow 1833, maker peter arthur" (dealer's description) i am unable to determine if the maker was peter aitken, whose first mark had a period after the p, as found in jackson's guide to eng, scot, et al hallmarks, 3rd revised edition, 1989, or as my dealer claims peter arthur, whose mark in the book of old silver, eng et al, 35th printing 1979 does not show any period, like peter aitken's later mark. interestingly jackson has no reference to peter arthur while wyler makes no reference to peter aitken. could these marks, through some error, belong to the same person? should i believe jackson's guide to be correct because of the period? i'm sorry to be unable to send a photo, but having the spoons with a magnifying glass and both books in front of me didn't help. both peter aitken and peter arthur have items ascribed to them for sale on the internet. i thank you for your help and expertise. -mark77 IP: Logged |

Wyler's book is obsolete. The English section was copied from an earlier edition of Jackson. The Scottish section of Jackson's 3rd edition has been completely revised, so you can assume the first attribution is unsubstantiated. Ian Finley mentions neither name in his book on Scottish silver, and Richard Turner's Scottish Directory has no silversmith with PA initials in the Glasgow list, So, unless someone else can come up with something more definitive, you will have to go with Jackson's 3rd. If a dealer told me that a queen's pattern spoon had "raised applied decoration" to the stem, and also relied on Wyler, I wouldn't rely on his/her judgement too much... [This message has been edited by adelapt (edited 09-15-2008).] IP: Logged |
