I have just purchased a snuff box made by James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield. It is marked, under a banner,James Dixon & Sons Sheffield, Cornish Pewter Made in England and the number L1461. Any information regarding date etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Catdotty. If you could please add a bit more information to your posting we might be able to provide you with some information. We are a small group of collectors and it is good form to introduce yourself by telling us a bit about your interests in silver and in this particular box. Also, some clear photos really are essential since there are so many similar markings and the style of an object is so central to an object's identification that to try to tell you anything without them would be somewhat futile. Also, by providing photos everyone here on the forum can all share in in your appreciation of your box.

Thanks,
Kimo

The use of the term "Cornish tin" could be viewed as being sometimes synonymous with the Britannia pewter alloy. These two types of pewter do not however always contain the same combination of metals in their alloys, the tin ore from Cornwall being notoriously high in lead before refining. James Dixon might have made this distinction in terminology so not to imply that the pewter was lead free or within the standard of so called lead free Britannia which once could contain 1 to 2 percent lead but according to modern definitions should only contain 0.2% lead or lower.
