I Suspect your date is 1898 - 1899 with a small "y" in script, and Jackson's has the "HM" being entered in 1896-1897... However, my edition states; "Names after Jan 1st, 1850 not disclosed" for Birmingham Smiths. Maybe someone else has a better reference than I ... Sorry... "Smaug" PS Pictures get quicker responses because the letters are used a couple of times through the years, the small "y" at least 4 times, and the Font and Cartouche shape helps to narrow down the suspects... :-) IP: Logged |

If 1898, then probably H. Matthews (registered Jun 1893) per K. C. Jones' "Silversmiths of Birmingham". (Fancy me sticking my nose into a Brit question!) IP: Logged |

The date could also be 1923; Matthews was still working at that date. He is not the only HM, though, so a picture of the hallmark would a great help. IP: Logged |
