[26-1066]

Matching Set of Solid Silver 3 x Knives and 3 x Forks

They all have the Assay Lion Passant and the makers of T.N. (Thomas Northcote - Silver Makers) but i cannot see any lettering to denote the actual year.

Each fork measures 18.7cm in length and each knife measures 21.4cm in length.

I`ve got a picture, but not sure how to post it on the forum.

Look at the top of the page and you will see a link that says to post photos" Click on it and follow each step carefully. It is not hard once you get the hang of it.

Welcome to the forum! Do hope you post pics of your items. We really need to see the marks to venture a guess.

As you no doubt already know, Thomas Northcote was a London silversmith, in the 1790s. There really should be at least 4 marks and probably 5: maker's mark, assay mark, city mark, date mark and duty mark.

You have the maker's mark of T.N. and the assay mark of the lion passant. The city mark for London, I believe, is a crowned leopard head. The duty mark for the 1790s would be a king's head facing right.

Here is an example of a Thomas Northcote marks in 1797:

This isn't a very clear pic for hard to make out the T.N.

Hi guys,

I`ll have a bash at posting some pics, when I get a minute.

But in the mean time. I can`t see 4 Hall marks on mine?

I`ve got a lion and what looks like an FN? One on each side of the handles. Is this right or have I been deputed!!!!

Poor silverplate -- I know how you feel! I spent quite a wad on a digital camera so I could post photos here and I CANNOT figure out how to succeed at that! I'll keep trying, though . . .

The fact that there is a lion means almost nothing without the other marks. There are millions of lions out there on silverplate that are sneaky imitations of the various English lions passant without actually being illegal exact copies. But maybe it's a lion from another country which means something other than an electroplater or OSP maker's mark? Did the person who sold it to you tell you it was English and by this particular silversmith from that particular year? Did this vendor offer a guarantee that it was as described?
