[26-1081] Hi This is a piece from the 20th C A box with machine worked and stamped decoration - Birmingham 1927, large case C I think - 2.5" diam My question is who is the maker? - I can't find that manufacturer. More importantly "Cambridge & Oxford, ORA"?
I always thought that was the name of a manufacturer of powder called ORA (a powder box?). Recently I have found out it could also stand for "Oxford Royal Academy". Why the Cambridge then, and how long has this organization being going for, I can't quite see what it does that would have involved this box? I still think it is a vanity item so the link to the Universities seems strange -------------------------------------- This Chester 1919 box is added for comparison, same size and period and I think use?

With silver when an 'r' appears, suspect railroad. Could this be some small line that joined the two cities? It is not unusual for railroads to have names of cities in them. Like: Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe. IP: Logged |

I think that the 'ORA' relates to a retailer with branches in Oxford & Cambridge, and that another organization is less likely. In this context, a railroad connection seems less likely again. IP: Logged |

S.P.Ora - with branches in both university towns - was a shop selling china, glass, trinkets and novelties. Most of the goods would not thave been silver, but china and glass. They were acting as retailers here, probably with a piece made by one of the large Birmingham manufacturers, such as Adie Brothers. IP: Logged |
