Your query is a little confusing. I don't think anyone will be able to help you with your identification without some sort of image. A dessert spoon is not a very large spoon, perhaps 8 inches long. A serving spoon usually has some sort of different shape. Often what people see in 19th century silver as a serving spoon is just a really large tablespoon--which people used for soup before flatware makers got all complicated in the 1880s. A basting spoon would theoretically be a spoon with a very long handle for reaching into a hot oven to baste (pour drippings) over a roasting something or other. But a basting spoon is a sort of mythical creature in American silver...and I'll let others weigh in on that. IP: Logged |

Do try and post the photos. If you don't have a camera, please explain what you mean by "hallmarked silver." Does it say "sterling" or have some other mark? Tom IP: Logged |

This a Birmingham, England mark. The initials ESB stand for Edward S. Barnsley & Co. - the main trading name of the now better known Adie Brothers (Herbert & Percy). The n will be the date letter for 1912-13. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Hi thanks for that, that will be a good help as I could not find it. I have a collection of spoons which I am trying to still identify. I have got some makers names but for others I haven't. They are mostly Scottish spoons from Edinburgh Glasgow. I will post these on this forum and hope someone knows about them. Thanks for the info. It is good to see that some people are willing to share their knowledge with others which don't know too many things about silver. cheers IP: Logged |
