[26-1429] Hi, I own silver tongs that have a mark I cannot identify. These tongs were found with a few others that were American made. The marks are "AZ" "11" and what looks like the profile of a woman's head. Here are some photos:

Never mind. I just found the answer. They are Georgian period sugar tongs. The maker is Alexander Zeigler from Edinburgh, whose marks were recorded from 1782 - 1823. IP: Logged |

Yes, not only was the answer found, but the item is now listed on eBay, eh? Not quite in accord with the Guidelines... [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 06-18-2007).] IP: Logged |

I just checked out the guidelines. Which one did I violate? That is my listing on ebay. I listed it after I discovered the answer to my own question. I was not advertising the listing. I had not listed the tongs when I posted on the forum and did not mention ebay in my post. The guidelines mention that it is rude to list an item on ebay right after getting information on this board. But I did not receive information about these tongs on the board. The reason I followed-up on my initial post was to prevent people from researching something that I already figured out, and to let people know, as a matter of interest, what I found. If I had received information about these tongs on this board, I would have waited at least a couple of weeks before listing them. I also want to add that I really like this board, and spent hours going over different threads after I found it a few days ago. I'd like to contribute to it, although my knowledge pales in comparison to most people here. I've become a recent silver fanatic over the last couple of months, and have been buying pieces at estate sales, auctions, keeping some, and selling others. I'm learning a lot, and really enjoying reading about the history behind these pieces and the artistry required to craft them. IP: Logged |

peternuss, The post and the subsequent immediate sales effort clearly demonstrate your intent to use the forums for business research. In the least, you violated the spirit of several items in the Guidelines. From the Guidelines:
quote:
quote: If there was a sudden change in circumstance, you could have requested that the post be taken down before others replied. I suggest you re-read the Guidelines. Afterwards please give it some thought and let us know if you intend to adhere the Guidelines both in principle and in spirit. If you are, then I am sure everyone will welcome you. If you intend to participate please be very careful about keeping your business very much removed from the SSF. If there is any chance of something becoming a part of your imminent business please don’t share until it is no longer an issue. Please reply in 48 hours. IP: Logged |

I have re-read the guidelines and have every intention of following them. I fully understand and appreciate the concern about the potential conflicts of mixing business into these discussions. As I mentioned in my last post, I look forward to contributing to this forum in the future. IP: Logged |
