[26-1518] Hi, I purchased this Georgian tablespoon at an antique fair because of its unusual hallmarks, the vendor was friendly but was not sure of its origin and said it looked like Newcastle silver but a little research shows Newcastle town mark is three castles. The town mark looks more like a four section shield? I think the makers mark is GG or GY. I wonder if anyone could help with identifying it. Many Thanks,

Hello Glenboy1 and welcome to the forum. If you can add some more information to your first posting I think you may be more likely to receive helpful responses. If you go back and re-read Please Read Before You Post at the start of this page you will see that we ask people who are new to the forum to provide us with some introductory information on their interest in silver and in the particular object about which they have a question. We are simply a group of people who enjoy discussing and collecting silver and as such is good form to introduce yourself and let us know a bit about your interests in silver and why you are interested in this particular spoon about which you are asking. Are you a collector of Georgian spoons? Thanks! IP: Logged |

I can see why glenboy bought it. We have a pointed bottom Lion Passant -which looks Guardant to me - which rules out many of the provincial offices. All marks seem to have a crease across them -especially the lion. Are there three or four marks ? Makers mark, lion passant, and two further marks or just three marks? Are the last two marks identical (the punch form suggests not from the corner clipping - but might be mis-strike) or one large mark ? Are the two (or one) last mark(s) upright or side ways? Are we looking at a pair of distorted London leopards heads? Are are they pseudo marks. All answers on a postcard please IP: Logged |

Hi Kimo, Yes my first post. I like to collect small items of U.K silver in particular anything that's a little different to the norm. Recently also bought a couple of Chinese silver items which has amazing embossed decoration and would be keen to find some more. Cheers, IP: Logged |

Hi Clive, Thanks for the response, there is a crease going through the marks, so would this suggest the last mark would have been made by a single strike and not two marks. I've had a good look through Jacksons Silver Marks book and could the maker be Geo. Jones 1739 London (page 195)? IP: Logged |
