[01-0900]

We recently acquired a 3 piece antler carving set with the name Levesley Brothers, Sheffield engraved on the knife blade along with a crown stamp, a lion and possibly an "e". Can you tell me anything about the company, the stamps and when it might have been made?

Are all three pieces marked? Any difference in the marks?

Only the knife is marked with the three stamps. However, it came the original box and each piece is fitted to the box. Any ideas?

If it looks like silver it is probably electroplated. Other marks of this company have been dated as being used from 1875 to circa 1935 or they are undated. Photos might help.

Do you have any info on the company itself?

Sorry, I don't -- perhaps another member of the forum does.

Levesley Brothers of Shefield, England made hollow-ware, cutlery, electroplated wares (c1875-1935), and sterling silver wares.

A "crown/lion/e" could be a Sheffield hallmark for sterling silver marked in 1897-1898, or in 1922-1923. If so, the style of the letter "e" and the style of the surround can be used to determine the date the item was marked.

Has anyone ever seen a sterling carving knife? Could it be made sharp enough to carve anything?

Hi,

Are all of the marks on the blade itself? Often these kinds of things have sterling ferrules, which are just the metal bands around the join between the handle and the blade. For example, a knife may have a silverplated blade and a mother of pearl or bone handle, with a sterling ferrule in between.

I can't believe that a carving set would have a sterling blade. A fish set, certainly, but not a carving set.

All three markings are on the area between the blade and the handle. The Levesley Brothers name is on the blade.
So, should I assume that it was made prior to 1935 and the blade is electroplated?
I forgot to mention that to the left of the crown/lion/e are the the letters G.B. with a circle around it. Also, the style of the "e" is very plain and simple.
And thanks for the info. I didn't think anyone would respond.

What are the other two pieces in the set and are there any marks on them that you haven't mentioned?

One is a steel (sharpening rod) which says Cast Steel on it. The third is a meat fork which is long and very thin. It has a foot or brace that levers downward. Neither of these have other markings.
Back to the knife, on the blade it specifically has an emblem which looks like a sea shell. The next line says Forward, the third line Levesley Brothers and the last line Sheffield.
Mostly I'm interested in the age and info on the company or the pieces themselves. These are pieces that we will sometimes use.
Thanks for any help.

None of the marks indicate that anything in the set is electroplated.

The knife ferrule is sterling and was marked in 1922 or 1923. I think it is reasonable to assume that the set was assembled around that time.

Does anybody have any info on the ferrule maker "G.B."?
