I'm thinking that this is a silver mustard pot, with cobalt liner made in Birmingham in 1929-30.

What I need help with is figuring out the other marks.

  • First: Ro747469
  • Under that, the maker's mark of Mn&We, anchor, lion passant, and letter date E in reserve corresponding to 1929-30
  • under that there is an oval with the letters MA and also what looks like a Christmas tree on it's side with the top of it facing right.
  • Below that is a very thick X with the reserve showing through as 4 triangles.

As usual, Merci beau coup for the help and lesson. I've spent the weekend with my nose in books and I'm stuck at this point.

The "Ro747469" is Rd747469, the design registration number issued in 1929 or somewhat before then.

Kenneth Crisp Jones' book, "The Silversmiths of Birmingham and the Marks: 1750-1980" ought to have the maker's mark.

It is possible and likely that the X is the mark of the journeyman who actually made the pot. Journeymen were wage earning craftsmen who had completed an apprenticeship with a master silversmith and had chosen not to open their own shop but instead to work in the shop of another. These craftsmen were sometimes allowed to mark the items they had made with their mark as well as the mark of the shop owner/Master silversmith.

Fred - thank you. Very interesting info on the possible origin of the X.
