Past British - Irish Sterling topics/threads worth a look.

Is there any interest out there for an English Silver Salon Forum? If so, is anyone interested in moderating?

Segregating English or all British silver into a separate forum seems an excellent idea. It would reduce the time for searching for us and its cost for you both on the English/British forum and what remains in the 'General Forum'.
You might even go a step further and at the same time also create an 'American Sterling' forum. The remaining 'General Forum' would then just contain discussions on "philosophy", smithing and other truly general topics plus the relatively few discussions of items from outside the US/Europe and those the origin of which cannot be determined.

As the accumulated history in the popular forums grow in volume, splitting them will become ever more desirable. The earlier you do it the less work it will be.

I also like the idea, as one whose true love lies in Irish and English silver. I enjoy the other fora, but would welcome the opportunity to specialize the discussion!

I, too, have thought for some time that such a forum would be appropriate, but how inclusive do you envision it to be? There is great potential for overlaps with other forums in what might be included, so I have spent a few minutes with the dictionary, and "English," in the strict sense, is pretty restrictive, excluding Scotland, Ireland, and the Dominions and colonies of the old Empire. If the intention is to include these, which seems natural, they would fall within the present British Commonwealth (and Irish Republic), so "British" or "British and Irish" would seem more appropriate. Should English electrooplate be left to the Silverplate Forum, then "Sterling" might be more appropriate than "Silver" (but what then of Sheffield plate?). Have any of our UK correspondents any thoughts on the matter?

Thanks, all, for your input. So I think the interest is there. Now we just need to define the scope and find a moderator. Any volunteers? Once the new forum is set up, we can move all old related posts into the new forum to make it easier to find things.

English vs. British scope is a good question. Perhaps the moderator in waiting will have a preference. Sheffield Plate seems to be in a category all of its own, but again, it depends on the level of comfort of the moderator. If anyone is interested in moderating a new "British Silver??" forum, please contact us at info@smpub.com and we can all figure out what makes sense. For anyone considering the moderator role, you should know that you don't have to be an "expert" to be a moderator. Some level of knowledge would certainly be helpful. You can see the Want to be a moderator link for more information.
