[01-1124]

Hi there,

My web host is acting up even so I have only managed to upload a few photos.

I have a gilded silver desk set - a detailed tray with two glass jars with gilded silver tops.

The marks consist of an "A" with a crown above it, a "q" with a crown above it, a bulls face, and the letters "M E" with an emblem in between.

Any help for age, maker and origin would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

Ross,
You might check out French pre Revolution marks.
Could be Rochelle 1774-1780 small charge mark (intertwined initials) and bull's head discharge mark.

RossinScotland,

Nice photos. Most of us are only seeing the first half of these images.

Thanks.

Thanks for the editing Scott. Tripod was not uploading the photos properly. I can only see halves aswell, but all the marks are there. In the first photo, the mark missed out is the "q" with a crown and there is nothing under the bull. Thanks again.

I hope this isn't some kind of weird competency exam.
  • The first two marks are Charge mark for Paris 1774-1780, and the maker's mark for Marc-Etienne JANETY.
  • The next mark is the date letter for 1779.
  • The next marks are English.
  • The next mark is the discharge mark for Paris 1774-80.
Do I pass? I hope so because I sprained my neck trying to read the Maker,s mark.

I would buy the first, second and fourth mark. But I wouldn't want the third group.

You pass, I didn't have a clue. So the English marks are of a different period then? Thank you.

Although the first of the four marks is unreadable in the photo, the English marks appear to be those for London, 1834. If these are on the French piece, it was probably imported and assayed for resale in that year. Otherwise, a later item may have been added to the set.

Thanks, but what I meant was the first of the four ENGLISH marks. The soverign's head appears to be that of Wm.IV, first used in 1834 with the "t" date letter, but to confirm that you would need to see that the lion's (leopard's) head was uncrowned. That should be the first mark in the series, which is rubbed, or at least has been cleaned out of its dark background of tarnish.

The first mark is completely rubbed so I suppose that doesn't help. Thanks for your info.
