[01-1302] I have this brush that took me forever to find the marks on. They are in with the pattern of the silver. There is a WC in an oval, a lion, a shield and a shield with a R in it. Does anyone happen to know the maker? In an old Kovel's I found the mark WC and it stated it was for William Cross of Boston Mass. with dates of B1658 and C1695. I have no idea what these dates mean. I also read that in 1914 a dating system was started with the makers initials and letters. After 1830 they started using numbers. Does anyone know if this brush can be made by this person? Also there are no sterling marks on it but I believe it is sterling. Also does anyone know if the symbol on the top has any special meaning? Any help is appreciated. Here are the pictures. The brush is English, made by W. Comyns & Sons, and hallmarked in London for 1892-1893. IP: Logged |

Your brush looks possibly English, although the detail of the marks is not too clear. If these are English hallmarks, W.C. is the maker, the lion indicates sterling silver, the R indicates the year. All important is the remaining shield (bottom left) which indicates where it was made (or assayed) - the most common are a leopard's face for London, crown for Sheffield, and an anchor for Birmingham. The symbol on the top is the family crest of the original owner, again this could be checked if you can confirm it is English. IP: Logged |

Thank you so much in helping ID this brush. Yes there is a leopards face so you say London. I was told to come here because you people know your stuff. Bama was right about that! Again, thank you both for the help. Also thank you to Scott Martin for getting my pictures on here since I couldn't get them here.
