I am trying to decipher some marks and would appreciate help. It's a compote dish, rather ornate with a woman's face pattern, replicated and done in relief + flowers. The marks are:

    JFF&?? (or JFFa??)

Something that appears to be a crown with handles on each side but nothing like I've seen on the web so far.

    The lion

    G

    Queen Victoria (facing left)

Can anyone give me some idea of the date of the piece and/or the maker?

Thanks in advance.

Rachel

Hi there,

JFF is the makers mark. The lion as you may know represents the sterling silver standard. The crown is Sheffield but I am unsure what it would be with handles?. Queen Victoria's portrait is the duty mark, so your piece is pre 1890. The capital letter "G" dates the piece to either 1850 or 1874.

Thanks. The 'handles' on the crown may be the outline of the crown .. it just doesn't look like any crown I've seen on the web in researching this.

Your dates were very helpful as from my research, I wasn't sure.
