Rachel Posts: 2 Registered: Nov 2003	posted 11-30-2003 08:24 PM [01-1321] I am trying to decipher some marks and would appreciate help. It's a compote dish, rather ornate with a woman's face pattern, replicated and done in relief + flowers. The marks are: JFF&?? (or JFFa??) Something that appears to be a crown with handles on each side but nothing like I've seen on the web so far. The lion G Queen Victoria (facing left) Can anyone give me some idea of the date of the piece and/or the maker? Thanks in advance. Rachel IP: Logged
Scotia Posts: 125 Registered: Oct 2003	posted 12-01-2003 05:44 AM Hi there, JFF is the makers mark. The lion as you may know represents the sterling silver standard. The crown is Sheffield but I am unsure what it would be with handles?. Queen Victoria's portrait is the duty mark, so your piece is pre 1890. The capital letter "G" dates the piece to either 1850 or 1874. IP: Logged
