The spoon was made in Sheffield in 1930 or 1929 which I can recognize from the hall mark and the sign on the handle. But I can't find the history of C.A.F 1930. The box is a lovely stuff. I like the material: silver and the hard wood with beautiful nature pattern. I guess the wood is SCENTEDROSE-WOOD or PADAUK. The spirit of this box is really like some ancient Chinese furnitures. Thanks lot! IP: Logged |

Hi there, Hans Hansen (1884-1940), opened a silversmith shop in Kolding, Denmark in 1906. They were still in business and using the same mark until 1992, when they became a part of Georg Jensen. My guess is that it dates to somewhere around the 1960s, and is made of rosewood. Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 07-14-2004).] IP: Logged |

The makers of your spoon were Walker & Hall of Sheffield, founded c.1834. The spoon appears to be a prize for a gun club etc, presumably for marksmanship. So, what's it doing in a Danish box? IP: Logged |

Patrick and Cheryl, Many thanks for reply. Patrick: The spoon was not in the box. I bought them in a same open market but from different seller. At the beginning, I guessed that The C.A.F may means Caledonian Army Fair or something about Scotland, because I bought them in Glasgow. Unfortunately, I could not find information about that. Cheryl: I found a similar box on the Internet. It is bigger than mine. quote: Please tell me how did you identified the history of my box Thank you again. Chen Xi IP: Logged |

Hi Chen Xi, I've been interested in Scandinavian design since childhood (only 8 year old in the neighborhood who wanted a Danish Modern bedroom instead of white & gold "French Provincial"), started collecting Scandinavian silver some twenty-odd years ago and due to a lack of English-language resources, just picked up bits and pieces of info. Have to question why the seller of the other box calls it "Art Deco" and wonder if he has provenance for the 1935 date. Though Scandinavian Modern started appearing in the '30s, for me, the piece appears to be classic mid 20th Century Modernist and has that '60s feel (give or take 10 years either direction). Karl Gustav Hansen took over when his father Hans passed away in 1940, I believe he was a trained sculptor as well as silversmith. Under his leadership, during the height of Danish Modern popularity, the company produced some wonderful pieces of jewelry and holloware. Yours is a very nice piece and it does have a lovely simplicity. Hi Cheryl, Here are two pictures of a ancient Chinese box that I would like to share with you and everybody in SMP.Thanks lot for your kindly help. The box is not belong to me. It is the collection of a Glasgow museum named Burrell Collection. Recently, they have a exhibition of Chinese art and culture named One Million Days in China. If interesting, you can visit this website: Glasgow Museum The box was a food carrier made in 17 century. I like the design and materials it used.
