I have two lead crystal bottles with silver tops with the following marks:

    TJW in an oval shape
a lion passant in an oblong box
an upper case R in a coat of arms type shield
an owl in almost a teacup shape
Aany idea as to the origin?

The jars are faceted, 1 and 1/4 inch diameter, 1/8th inch thick...one is 6 and 1/2 inches tall, the other is 3 inches tall. Engraved inside one is 1480W, the other has GTZY W engraved inside.

Any chance of a photo of the marks? The lion may indicate English sterling, the R may be a date letter - BUT the owl? Could this be a leopard's face? In this case, this would be the mark for the London assay office, and the date letter might be for 1892. There was a London maker at this time who used the initials TJW. Photos would certainly clarify this!

I have seen "TJW" on dressing set jar tops in London around 1890 - 1910. The R in a shield could therefore very well be 1892. Here is a picture of the 1892 marks and I have to admit that the leopard's head could be described as an owl!
